How many players do I need before a death or quit rate means anything?
A rate from a handful of players can swing wildly, and rare events need far more players than people guess. This entry shows how to work out the number of players needed for a given accuracy, and how to deal with a zone only some players visit.
Why this works
A rate measured on few players is a guess with a wide margin, and rare events make it worse. Working out the group size from the accuracy you need, before looking at results, keeps you from acting on luck.
When not to use it
Not worth it for a quick first look or a change that is easy to undo. Just try it and watch; save the careful count for decisions that are costly to reverse.
