Show how much of the island is explored without counting the sea

An exploration meter that counts every revealed square never reaches the top on an island, and one that rounds up shows full when a last corner is still dark. Here is how to count what is worth counting, and when the meter may say all.

Why this works

A progress number is a promise about what is left to do, so it should count only what the player can actually finish. Sea that cannot be walked would stretch or cap the meter, and rounding down makes sure full means nothing is missing.

When not to use it

Wrong when the sea matters too, as in a sailing game where every wave is worth finding, or when the map grows forever. Then count named places or goals instead of cells, because a share of an endless map never reaches full.
