Say which direction the camp lies in, in words, without the word flickering at the border
A text like north-east or south is easy to compute and annoying to read, because the word flips back and forth when the player walks along the line between two directions. Here is a small rule that calms it, and the wrap-around trap near west.
Why this works
A word that changes at one sharp line must change back and forth when the player stands near that line. Letting the old word stay a little past its edge, so switching needs a clear turn, trades a tiny delay for text that stays calm and readable.
When not to use it
Do not use it when the player needs the exact direction at every moment, as when steering a boat by the word alone. Show a moving arrow or the angle itself there, because a held-back word is always a little behind.
