Spielerando

Tell the explorer how much farther they can go and still be home before dark

The player is out in the wilds late in the day and wants to know whether to keep going. Out and back cost different amounts of the time that is left, and night may already have begun. Here is the sum that gives an honest answer.

Why this works

A trip out and back costs twice the outward distance, and part of the budget is already spent by where you stand. Working out the point of no return from what is left, not from what you started with, keeps the warning true at every moment of the day.

When not to use it

Wrong when the way home is not the way out, such as a one-way river, a loop path or a game with a teleport back. Count the real return route there, or the player is told to turn back too early or too late.
