One start position wins more often: is the spot strong or do better players pick it?
If players choose their start, the winning spot may only reflect who chooses it. This entry shows which games to use to judge the map itself, and how to measure how much self-selection inflates the numbers.
Why this works
Strong players often choose the best-looking spot, so a high win rate there can come from the people, not the spot. Only games where chance gave out the spots show the spot alone, and the gap shows how much choosing matters.
When not to use it
It does not work when spots are never assigned by chance, or when too few such games exist for a spot. Then you cannot judge the spot, and should run a batch of randomly assigned games before changing the map.
