Is the top mission chosen because it is better, or just because it is on top?
People pick what they see first. If you always show the same mission in the same place, you cannot tell taste from habit. This entry shows how to swap the order for some players and separate the two effects with a simple calculation.
Why this works
People favor whatever is listed first. Showing the same two options in both orders, assigned by chance, cancels that pull, so what is left in the average is the real appeal, and the difference between the orders shows the pull of the top.
When not to use it
Do not use it when the order carries meaning, such as missions sorted by difficulty, where a fixed order helps people. Also not when the groups differ in who sees which order. Then keep one sensible order and ask players.
