Which difficulty do players really play on after changing it several times?

The setting chosen at the start tells you little when people switch up and down during a campaign. This entry shows how to find the level each player actually spent their time on, and why menu fiddling in the first minute must not count.

Why this works

What someone plays is shown by where their time went, not by how often they tapped a setting. A quick look at the hardest level is curiosity; two hours on another is a decision. Weighing by time sees through the poking around.

When not to use it

Do not use it when the game changes difficulty by itself, or when players are supposed to adjust it often as their skill grows. Then there is no single settled level; look at the path of changes instead.
