Story lines spoken during a fight: does anyone actually hear them?

Characters talk while the team is busy fighting, and the writer assumes the players listen. This entry shows how to find out for each spoken line how many players were free to hear it, including the trap of overlapping fight periods that make the numbers add up wrong.

Why this works

A line that played is not a line that landed. People take in speech only when their attention is free, so count the time each person was free, and count overlapping fights only once or you blame a line twice.

When not to use it

Skip it when the line also appears as text on screen that players can read during the fight, or when the line does not matter to the story. Then fix the real problem instead: move key lines to a calm moment.
