Spielerando

The game shows a level-up at once and then the server says it never happened

To feel quick, an online game celebrates a kill the moment it happens, before the server has answered. When the server disagrees, the player has already spent a new skill point on something that does not exist. Here is how to show hope without giving out anything real until it is confirmed.

Why this works

Speed and truth can be kept apart. The screen may guess ahead so the game feels quick, but anything the player can spend or keep must rest on what the server has agreed to, so a wrong guess never costs more than a corrected number.

When not to use it

Skip it when the connection is fast enough that waiting for the answer is barely noticed, or when the game is played alone on one device. Then show only the true level, with no guess to correct and no tentative badge to explain.

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "The game shows a level-up at once and then the server says it never happened" (read_entry show-a-predicted-level-up-without-unlocking-anything-early) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
