Close a circular iris on the hero and make sure no corner is left uncovered
A circle that shrinks around the hero or grows from them is a classic way to change scenes, but it often leaves the far corners showing at the start or end, especially when the hero is near an edge. Here is the size to start from and how to time it.
Why this works
A circle covers the screen only when it reaches the farthest corner, and that corner depends on where the hero stands, not on the middle. Sizing it from the hero outward leaves no uncovered corner wherever the hero is.
When not to use it
Skip it when the hero is not the focus of the change, such as a time jump, a dream or a chapter title. Use a plain fade or a wipe across the screen, which fits a change that has no single place of origin.
