Point a quest compass at the goal without wild spinning when you stand on it

A needle that points at the next objective is a great guide, until you reach it: the direction flips with every step and the needle whirls. It can also take the long way round when the goal passes behind you. Here is how to keep it calm and sensible.

Why this works

Direction only means something when there is a distance to point across. Right on top of the goal it is noise, so the needle should keep its last good answer, turn the short way round, and fade out so that arriving looks like arriving.

When not to use it

Skip it when the way to the goal is not a straight line, such as a maze or a city where the needle would point through walls. Show the next turn on the real route or a drawn path instead.
