Spielerando

Do players ever run low on magic, or is the magic bar decoration?

A resource only shapes the game if it sometimes runs short. This entry shows how to find out whether yours matters, and why looking at what is left after a fight gives the wrong answer.

Why this works

A limited resource matters only if it sometimes runs short, and the low point is what the player felt, not the level after the danger passed and the bar refilled. Fights where nothing was spent say nothing about the bar, so they are left out.

When not to use it

It is the wrong question for a game where the bar is meant to be a side detail, or for classes that hardly use it. A low point also does not say whether the fix is cheaper spells or faster refill, so look at what a typical fight spends before you adjust anything.
