Which monsters do players run from even when they are strong enough to win?

Running from a much stronger monster is normal, but running from an equal or weaker one points at something annoying or unfair. This entry shows how to separate the two so you find the monsters that irritate players.

Why this works

Running from a far stronger enemy is sensible, so it says nothing about the monster. Fleeing when strong enough to win is a choice, and a choice made again and again shows that something about the fight is not worth it. Comparing like with like finds those monsters.

When not to use it

It misses players who avoid a monster before it ever notices them, so count those separately if you can. And fleeing is not always annoyance: where a path can be walked around, running away is a fair choice. Raise the bar for such monsters or leave them out.
