Enemies scale with the hero, so does leveling up still feel like anything?

When monsters copy your level everywhere, gaining a level can change nothing. When they only copy it in some places, some stretches of the game are flat and others jump. This entry shows how to find the flat stretches before the players complain.

Why this works

Growth feels like growth only when you pull ahead of what you face. If opponents rise by exactly as much as you do, nothing changes, so you have to measure the gap between hero and enemy at each level and look for the stretches where it stands still.

When not to use it

Skip it when levels are not the point of progress, as in a game where gear or skill unlocks drive growth, or when every area has a fixed level. Then there is nothing to scale and no flat stretch to find.
