Spielerando

Hand a dead quest giver's open quests to someone who can finish them

The player's carelessness, or a plot twist, kills the person who was waiting for the delivery. The quest stays in the log and can never be completed. Here is how to name a successor in advance, skip those who are gone too, and handle the quests nobody can take.

Why this works

A promise made to a player outlives the person who made it. Naming a stand-in when the quest is written, and choosing the first one still alive, keeps the reward reachable, and an ending of its own for the case of nobody left means no quest simply vanishes.

When not to use it

Wrong when the giver is the heart of the quest, like a mentor whose death is the story. Then let the quest end or change on purpose, and protect the giver until the moment you want them gone.
