Letting players pause a shared game without ruining it

In a game that others are playing at the same time, a pause can be abused, forgotten, or end with everybody being thrown back into the action unprepared. This entry shows how to keep it useful and how to keep the game clock honest.

Why this works

A pause helps one person at the expense of everyone else, so it must cost something and end by itself. A short countdown on the way back, and a game clock that stood still meanwhile, keeps the match fair for those who were waiting.

When not to use it

Skip it in fast competitive matches where any stop can be used to rest, scout or break the other side's rhythm, and in games that run on real time that cannot be stopped. Let players leave and rejoin, or give breaks only between rounds.
