A friend joins a running match and unbalances the teams
Letting people in at any moment drops them into the middle of a fight and often onto the already stronger side. Here is how to park latecomers somewhere sensible and bring them in at a fair moment.
Why this works
A person who arrives mid-fight has no fair place in it, but a waiting room is harmless. Letting them watch first and placing them only at a calm moment lets you see how the sides stand then, so you can balance the teams you actually have.
When not to use it
Skip it in games where rounds last very long or never end, such as an open world, or for a drop-in co-op game where joining quickly is the whole appeal. There, place newcomers at once in a safe spot with some protection.
