Spielerando

A player runs off into the wall when their connection hiccups

When news about another player stops for a moment, guessing where they went keeps things smooth, but guessing forever sends them through walls and off the map. A good guess slows down on its own and gives up gracefully. Here is the shape of that guess and the limit that keeps it honest.

Why this works

When news stops, standing still is a clear mistake for someone running, but running on forever is a worse one. Carrying on with fading speed bridges a short gap invisibly and then stops, so a hiccup never sends a player through a wall.

When not to use it

Do not guess ahead for things that turn or stop suddenly and unpredictably, such as a character in a maze or a bouncing ball. Hold the last known place and show a connection icon, instead of inventing a path that may be wrong.
