Spielerando

Keep players' items when an update renames or removes an ingredient

A game update renames "oak plank" to "plank" and drops an old gem. Players who update must find all their things in the new names, and nothing may vanish silently. A player who opens an old save on a newer version, or a newer save on an older one, must not lose what the game does not know. This entry maps the old save to the new without losing anything.

Why this works

A saved bag is a promise that what the player owns stays theirs through every update. Following renames to the end, merging old names into one stack and keeping what you do not recognise protects that promise even for players who update late or never.

When not to use it

If you change what an item means rather than what it is called, a rename table is the wrong tool; a silent swap would hide a real balance change. Tell the player what changed, or compensate in a way they can see.
