Zoom a world map so zooming in and out feel equally fast

Zooming in on a big map often feels like it races at the start, while zooming back out crawls, and the spot under the cursor drifts away. Here is the one change that makes both directions match and keeps the place you pointed at where it was.

Why this works

We feel zoom as how many times bigger, not how many steps more. Going from one to two and from two to four are the same move for the eye, so the motion has to treat them alike, in both directions.

When not to use it

Skip it for a map with a few fixed levels, like a town, a region and the world, where each level is its own picture. Switch between those with a clear cut or a fade rather than a continuous zoom.
