How long does the player only read before they get to decide anything?
Even a good story loses people when pages go by with nothing to do. Measuring the length of a scene is not enough, because several short scenes in a row add up. This entry finds the longest stretch between choices and the road it lies on.
Why this works
Players feel waiting, not scene boundaries. What counts is the whole stretch of reading between two moments where they get to act, so the right thing to add up is the words along the road, scene after scene.
When not to use it
A long stretch is not always a fault. A slow opening, a quiet reveal or a story people want to just read can carry far more text; for a reading-first game, judge the pull of the writing, not the distance to the next choice.
