Let hunted animals recover, unless too few are left to ever come back
Hunt a herd to a handful and it is back to full strength a week later, so the story's last white stag means nothing. Here is how to make a population slow to grow when small, doomed when too small, and how to avoid whole numbers that quietly stop recovery altogether.
Why this works
A small herd grows slowly because there are few to breed, and a very small one cannot find enough mates at all. A rule with a point of no return makes the last of a kind a real loss, and keeping the left-over fractions stops small herds being frozen.
When not to use it
Skip it for animals the story needs in numbers, such as a food source for the whole game, or a creature that is magical and cannot die out. Then use a simple refill rule and keep the true extinction for the few species that matter.
