Pick the heir when the ruler dies and the eldest child is already gone
A dynasty story hangs on one question, who rules next, and the easy answer, the oldest living child, is wrong the moment an older child has left children of their own. Here is a succession order that follows family lines, falls back to siblings, and admits when nobody is left.
Why this works
People feel a succession is fair when it follows the family tree, not the age list. A claim belongs to a line, so a dead heir hands it to his own children before any younger sibling is looked at. One rule, applied the same way each time, settles every case.
When not to use it
Skip it when the ruler is chosen by vote, by merit or by a duel, or when your world has other customs such as the youngest inheriting. Write the custom of that people as its own rule instead of bending this one.
