Make asking an ally for help cost more each time you ask
If an ally helps whenever asked, the player calls in the cavalry every turn and the alliance means nothing. Here is a favour balance that pays for each request, makes quick repeat requests cost more, forgets old ones, and lets a refusal be a story beat that costs nothing.
Why this works
A favour that costs nothing is not a favour. Making each request dearer when it follows another quickly, and cheap again after quiet time, copies how real friendships work, so the player must weigh every ask instead of spamming it.
When not to use it
Skip it when help is meant to be a dependable part of the design, such as a tutorial companion or a story where the ally is always there. A rising price would punish the very thing you want players to use. Limit it by the story instead.
