Preview how a stand-and-fight choice ends, with both sides losing men each turn
Before the player chooses to hold the line, the story can say what is likely to be left. The simple way, one side hits and then the other, quietly favours whoever goes first and can leave both armies standing forever. Here is a fair turn-by-turn preview with a clear end.
Why this works
In real fights both sides hurt each other at the same time. Working out both losses from the same starting numbers, then applying them together, gives an estimate that favours nobody, and rounding up guarantees the fight actually ends.
When not to use it
Misleading when the real battle has luck, terrain, reinforcements or tactics the preview ignores, because players will take the estimate as a promise. Show it as a rough guess, or leave it out in a game built on surprise.
