Let fog creep in so the player loses sight at an exact distance

A fog slider that you turn from a little to a lot jumps at the start and then seems to do nothing. The player should lose sight of the far trees, then the near ones, at a steady pace, and you should be able to say how far they can see. Here is how.

Why this works

People judge fog by how far they can see, not by a dial setting. If you animate the thing they actually feel, the loss of sight goes at an even pace, and you can say in plain words how far the player sees.

When not to use it

Skip it when the fog is only a fixed backdrop that never changes, or when you want a stylised flat haze. There a plain colour gradient over the distance is simpler and just as readable.
