Spielerando

Let grass or bushes part as the player walks through and straighten up slowly

Plants that react to the player make a world feel solid, but a push that is the same everywhere looks flat, a blade right under the player has no side to bend to, and plants that snap back instantly look like rubber. Here is a push with soft edges, a fair choice for the middle, and a slow recovery.

Why this works

Living plants give way fast when pushed and straighten slowly afterwards, as their stems spring back. That difference in speed is what makes the grass look soft and alive. Basing the bend on distance makes it ease in and out, without a hard edge around the player.

When not to use it

Wrong for a stiff or stylised world where plants are decoration, for stone, crystal or cactus, or when there are so many plants that checking each costs too much. Use a plain wind sway and let the player walk over them.
