Make smoke, fire and magic particles fade in softly and change colour as they age
Particles that pop into existence at full strength and vanish at the end look cheap, and fire that keeps one colour looks like a sticker. Describe how each looks over its whole life with a few numbers. Here is the age-to-look rule, including the trap of blending additive glows.
Why this works
A puff of smoke is born, grows, thins out and disappears, and the eye expects each of those stages. Tying every look to how far through its life the particle is, rather than to seconds, makes it work for any lifetime and ends gently instead of vanishing.
When not to use it
Wrong for hard-edged or graphic styles where parts should simply appear and vanish, like pixel-art sparks, or for effects that must stay at full strength until a clear end, such as a warning marker. Then use a plain on-off.
