Show lightning as a double flash and let the thunder arrive later by distance

A single white frame looks like a glitch, and thunder that plays at the same moment as the flash makes every storm feel like it is right on top of you. Here is how a strike really reads on screen, and how to let the player judge by ear how close the danger is.

Why this works

The delay between flash and thunder is how people judge a storm's distance, and light is effectively instant. Starting the sound from the moment the flash is seen, not when it was chosen, keeps that sense of distance honest.

When not to use it

Don't use it in a game with a tiny world, or one that jumps between scenes quickly, where the delay would be longer than the player's attention. A plain flash with an instant rumble works better there.
