Make a flock of crows burst into the air in a wave, not all in the same frame
When the player steps into a field of crows, birds that all take off in the same instant look like one object being deleted. A real flock goes up in a ripple: the nearest bird first, then the alarm runs through the rest. Here is how to get that ripple and the starting times to use.
Why this works
Real flocks don't decide together: each bird reacts to its own danger, then to what its neighbours do. Passing the alarm along with a travel time gives a visible wave, and personal delays keep it from looking stamped.
When not to use it
Don't use it for a flock that must act as one on a signal, such as a trained formation or a scripted cutscene. Choose one shared takeoff time there, so the moment is exactly where the story wants it.
