Make fireflies drift into flashing together over a few minutes

A swamp full of fireflies that all blink at random is wallpaper, but a swarm that slowly pulls into one beat tells the player that something in the dark is coordinating. Here is how to get the drift into step working, why it must not happen at once, and the mistake that makes the whole swarm freeze.

Why this works

Each firefly is an impatient clock that rises fast and then slowly. A flash gives its neighbours a little push, and because the rise is curved, a push helps those who are behind more than it moves the rest.

When not to use it

Skip it when the flashing must follow music or a fixed beat, or when each light carries a message. Drive all lights from one shared clock there, because slow drifting would blur the signal.
