Fade between two outdoor backgrounds without a dark dip in the middle
When a story moves from day to evening, fading one picture out while the other fades in often leaves a dark, muddy moment half-way, as if a cloud passed. The cause is simple, and so is the cure. Here is what to fade and what to leave alone, and one more trap with colour.
Why this works
When two half-see-through pictures are stacked, the background shines through both and the middle looks darker. Keeping the lower picture fully solid and fading only the upper one leaves nothing behind to show through.
When not to use it
Don't use it when the dark moment is wanted, such as a scene change that should feel like closing your eyes or a time jump. Fade to black on purpose there, and hold it for a beat.
