Make eyes in the dark forest watch, blink, and vanish when lit too long

Two glowing eyes between the trees are an old trick that works, until they stay put when you shine a torch on them, or flick away at the first touch of light. The player should feel watched, then feel that the watcher judged the light. Here is how to give the eyes a patient state of mind.

Why this works

The scare works because the eyes react to how long you stare, not to a flick of light. If the build-up drains faster than it fills, quick sweeps do nothing and only a deliberate look makes them leave.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player has no light to aim, or when the eyes carry a message they must not miss, such as a clue or a warning. Then keep them visible until a clear action dismisses them.
