Show everything a one-of-two technology pick shuts out before it is made
When a story forces a player to pick one of two research paths, the loss is bigger than the option left behind, because everything built on it disappears too. Here is how to list the whole loss ahead of time so the choice is informed, not a trap.
Why this works
A choice is only informed if its price is visible. Losing one thing often takes everything built on it, so following the chain of dependence to the end shows the real cost, which is larger than the one thing the player is looking at.
When not to use it
Spoils a game built on discovery, where finding out what a choice closes is part of the fun and replay value. Also unneeded when the choices barely connect. Then name only the direct loss, or hide the list behind a hint.
