Show growing crops smoothly from the planting time, also right after loading a save
Crops that jump a size at each stage and pop all over again every time the world is loaded look cheap. Here is how the size comes from the saved planting time alone, grows smoothly, and the little pop at a new stage plays only when the player actually watches it happen.
Why this works
What you see should be worked out from how much the plant has grown, never remembered frame by frame. Then a saved game, a slow computer and a long wait all show the same plant. Only the little pop on a new stage needs memory, and only about what this screen has already seen.
When not to use it
Don't use it for plants that react to the player in the moment, such as one that wilts when touched or reaches toward the player, or for growth that can be undone step by step. Those need real memory of the present state.
