Spielerando

Make a pet or companion follow at a distance, without hugging or lagging behind

A companion stuck to your heels blocks the view and shakes when you stop, while one that ignores you gets lost in the wilderness. Here is a rule that lets it wander a little, speeds up with the distance, and appears next to you when it is hopelessly far.

Why this works

A follower that tries to stand exactly on the target trembles around it. Giving it a zone where it wants nothing, a pull that grows with distance and a slow reaction of its own makes it calm up close and eager far away, like an animal that keeps its own space.

When not to use it

Don't use it when the companion must stay in formation, guard a spot or walk exactly where the player walked, as in a line of followers. Those need a path to follow or a fixed place beside the player, not a loose leash.
