Make a campfire or torch flicker softly, stronger as the fuel runs low
A light that picks a new random brightness every frame buzzes like a broken lamp, and one that follows a plain wave looks mechanical. Here is how to get a lively but gentle flicker that repeats exactly, and how to make it nervous when the fire is about to die.
Why this works
Fire is neither steady nor jumpy: it drifts and now and then twitches. Smooth random values give the drift, a faster, weaker layer on top gives the twitch. Because the values come from the clock and a seed, not from dice thrown each frame, a replay or a second player sees the same fire.
When not to use it
Don't use it where the light itself carries information, such as a warning lamp, a lighthouse or a signal fire that must blink in a pattern, or for players who react badly to flicker. Offer a steady glow, or an off switch, there.
