Let a chopped tree creak, tip over away from the player and thud on the ground

A tree that rotates at a steady speed looks like a door, and one that always falls the same way looks canned. Here is how the fall starts slowly, speeds up like something heavy, goes away from the one with the axe, bounces a little and then lies still.

Why this works

A tall thing pivoting on its foot is pulled harder the further it leans, so the start is slow and the end fast. That slow start is the creak. A small, dull bounce on landing reads as heavy wood, and the fall always points away from whoever swung the axe.

When not to use it

Don't use it for a tree that is cut loose from above, burns apart or is blown away: those fall in pieces or sideways. For a fall that must land exactly on a target, such as a bridge, play a fixed hand-made animation instead.
