Let wind gusts sweep across the trees, and turn the wind without the forest jumping

Trees that all sway in the same beat look dead, and when the wind direction changes in a weather system every tree in the world lurches at the same instant. Here is how to make waves that visibly travel with the wind and turn it smoothly.

Why this works

A gust is a wave that moves, not a shake that happens everywhere at once. Each tree sways according to where the wave currently is at its spot, so the gust visibly sweeps across. When the direction turns, anchoring the wave where the player looks hides the jump.

When not to use it

Don't use it for a storm that should shake everything wildly, or for a small scene where all trees are close together: the delay between them is too small to see. Let them all sway together with a bit of random offset.
