Adjust enemy toughness when a player joins or leaves mid-fight

A boss built for one player is a joke for four, and a boss built for four is impossible for one. Scaling by player count is the standard answer, until someone joins mid-fight and the boss heals to full or someone leaves and the boss suddenly dies. Here is how to rescale without either surprise.

Why this works

A fight has a progress, and progress is a share of the whole, not a number of points. Keeping the share when the size changes means the battle carries on exactly where it stood, only longer or shorter.

When not to use it

Skip it when the number of players cannot change during a fight, or when you want a fixed challenge that skilled groups can beat with fewer people. Scaling then hides the difference that those players earned.
