Win rates look skewed because players left matches halfway

A match where someone quit in the first minute tells you nothing about whether the sides are balanced, yet it counts as a win for the other side. This entry shows which matches to set aside and why late leavers are not among them.

Why this works

A result only says something about the sides if the contest itself decided it. Someone who quits in the first minutes decides the match for the other team, while a late leaver mostly leaves a settled game. So set aside early quits, but keep late ones, or you throw away data and bend it the other way.

When not to use it

Do not use it when leaving is a normal part of the game, such as modes where people drop in and out, or when most matches have a leaver; the set-aside share then eats your data. In that case measure balance inside the stretches where everyone was present, or fix why people leave first.
