Spielerando

Spot the player who earns a hundred times more gold than everyone else

A duplication trick or broken reward shows up as a few players with absurd earnings, but the usual way of measuring "unusual" is blinded by those very players. This entry shows a measure that is not fooled by the outliers it is hunting.

Why this works

The usual yardstick of unusual is built from the average, and a huge value drags the average and its spread toward itself, so it hides itself. The middle value does not move when one number explodes, so measuring distance from the middle spots the outlier that the average would excuse.

When not to use it

It finds unusual numbers, not cheating. Rich veterans, event days and lucky finds also stand out, so compare only similar players and look at the log before deciding anything. It also does nothing against exploits that are spread thinly over thousands of players and make nobody stand out.
