How much of a co-op match is played with fewer players than it started with?

When teammates leave early, the people who stay play a harder game than you designed. This entry shows how to measure how much of the match was played at full strength and at less, even when the logs contain doubled or overlapping entries.

Why this works

The people who stay play a different game than the one you designed, so what counts is how long the match ran at each size. Counting seconds at each head count, with each person merged into one stay, shows the real picture even when logs repeat or overlap.

When not to use it

It is no use for games with no fixed team size, or where leaving only makes the rest stronger and nothing is lost. Time short-handed also does not tell why people left. If many leave early, look for the cause first, such as a bad start, before adding help for the ones who stay.
