Craft a one-of-a-kind key item and bring it back if it falls into the void
The player crafts the only grappling hook, then drops it while hit and watches it tumble into a bottomless pit. Now the game cannot be finished and the hook cannot be built again because it already exists. This entry makes the item unique and recoverable.
Why this works
A story can only go on if its key objects cannot be lost for good. Remembering that the item was made, separately from where it lies, lets the game rescue it for free and also refuse a second copy, so both a dead end and a duplicate are ruled out.
When not to use it
Do not rescue items that are meant to be fragile and replaceable, like a common tool the player can build again at will. Rescue is for things the game cannot continue without; for everything else, let loss sting a little.
