Limit how many crafted platforms a player can leave standing at once
A freeze ability builds little ice blocks to climb. Without a limit, the player builds a staircase to the sky and skips the level, and the game slows to a crawl. This entry caps the number, removes the oldest first, lets blocks melt, and handles two blocks placed on the same spot.
Why this works
Building tools are powerful, and power needs a budget so the level stays a level. A small count, a lifetime and a minimum gap keep the ability useful for a climb but too weak to skip the challenge. Dropping the oldest keeps the newest, which is what the player cares about.
When not to use it
Do not cap building in a game whose point is construction, such as a sandbox where the player makes bridges and towers for fun. Limit it only where building could skip a puzzle, and give the tool room to grow in a creative mode.
