Let a worn weapon land its last hit before it breaks

The sword has one point of wear left, the player swings at a boss and it shatters in mid-air with no damage dealt. Or one sweep through five enemies wears it down five times. This entry decides when a weapon breaks, how much a swing costs and why the last hit still counts.

Why this works

A player judges the weapon by what the swing did. If the tool fails before the blow lands, the game has cheated them of something they paid for. Resolving the hit at full strength first and only then taking away wear keeps cause and effect in the right order.

When not to use it

Do not use wear at all in games about mastery rather than upkeep, such as a tight action game where repair chores add nothing. If breaking is a theme, make it a story event or a rare weapon trait instead of a constant tax.
