Stop a temperature gauge needle from trembling while still following real changes

In a survival game the body temperature jitters slightly every moment because of wind, fire distance and biome blending, and the needle shakes with it. Here is how to calm the needle so it holds still on noise yet follows real warming and cooling without a delay you can feel.

Why this works

Averaging blurs everything, noise and truth alike. A dead band, like play in a gear, ignores small shivers completely, and when a real change leaves the band the needle moves at once, only a small step behind the truth.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player must read tiny differences, or when the value decides danger and must be exact, such as a poison level near its limit. Show the exact number, and keep the needle smoothing for art only.
