Spielerando

A player who digs a pit or falls into one must always have a way out

In a world where players dig, the walls of a hole soon rise higher than any jump. Players then sit at the bottom, with no idea if it is a puzzle or a bug. Here is a check that says whether the jump is enough, and if not, how many blocks must be stacked or when to step in and help.

Why this works

A player who is stuck without knowing why reads it as a bug, not a challenge. The way out is set by the lowest wall, since one low spot is enough, so measuring that one wall and what the player can reach tells you honestly whether help is owed.

When not to use it

Do not use it where being trapped is the point, such as a prison level or a puzzle room built around finding the exit. There, give clues about the way out instead of rescuing the player.
