A horse that must jump a fence at the right distance, or crash
A mount that clears any fence from any spot feels fake, and one that always crashes feels unfair. The honest rule is a window: too close and the chest hits the rails, too far and the landing is short. Here is how to compute that window from the fence and the animal's jump.
Why this works
Clearing a fence is not about the top of the arc, it is about being above the rails the whole way across. That is true only for a stretch of takeoff distances, so a rider can feel an early and a late edge and learn the right spot.
When not to use it
Wrong if the horse should jump by itself. Then a hidden takeoff window just hides skill. Let the animal pick its own spot, and use the window only to warn the player in a hint or in a training hall.
