Swinging on a rope and letting go to cross a chasm
Rope swings promise a long flight, but the launch speed is not what most people guess, and letting go at the very bottom is rarely best. Here is how the swing turns into a flight, and a way to find the best moment to release for the longest reach.
Why this works
The rope turns a swing into a launch whose strength and direction follow the circle you were moving on. Because speed is greatest at the bottom but the upward part buys flight time, the best release is a little later, which players can learn to feel.
When not to use it
Wrong when the gap should be crossable by any player, whatever their timing. A skill release is then a barrier. Offer a fixed rope ride or a bridge as a second way, and keep the swing for optional shortcuts.
